The End of the World

The end of the world is here. Two reasons:

1. My dishwasher broke.
2. Picnik is being KILLED by Google.

my dishwasher is broken
These two losses shall forever change my life. At least until:

1. I buy a new dishwasher, which may be a while, because I have decided not to use credit for ANYTHING and we just made a large extra payment on our debt. Like- just a few days ago. (shoot!/yay!) So… now I have the world’s biggest drying rack on which to dry all the dirty dishes that we had accumulated before we realized that the dishwasher was truly dead.
Also, I’d like to introduce my family to: paper plates, plastic cups and cheap plastic utensils. Also: pizza. (They they weren’t familiar with the delivery man before! Ha!) I will be spending the next week stalking Craiglist and drooling over entire 4-piece stainless steel appliance sets that I should NOT be thinking about buying.

Secondly, my world is forever saddened and changed by an email I received from Picnik on Saturday night. I read it while lying in bed. Picnik is closing on April 19th! I gasped loudly. The Manchild sympathetically asked, “What’s wrong?” I told him the news. He and I both mourned together. I stewed. I tossed and turned. I had a horrible night’s sleep. See? The World: It’s never going to be the same… until?:
2. I decide to give in to the unknown world of Google+. Here’s the deal: I use Picnik.com EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Usually I use Picnik to edit my photos for the blog:

Sometimes I use Picnik to edit photos to print:

Sometimes I use Picnik to create word art and printables:

if you tickle me i am not responsible for your injuries
This week my son and I used Picnik to create a poster for his 3rd grade non-fiction book report on falcons.

I USE PICNIK EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!!

But Google, who bought Picnik 2 years ago, is getting rid of Picnik and putting all of it’s photo editing goodies into the Google+ world. I do have a Google+ account, but I have never ever used it. I might have, like 4 friends on there. Google+ is Google’s attempt at a social media tool- like Facebook or Twitter. Except that: HELLO! Facebook and Twitter (and Pinterest!) are incredibly awesome and well-run. They are well-used, slick and forward thinking. Even though many of us have Google accounts and love Google for all it does in our lives (electronically), we just don’t need or want to use Google+ because we are getting along just fine with Facebook and Twitter (and any other social media/networking sites that people happily use). Many feel like Google is PUSHING people into using Google+. Closing down Picnik is one of those mean tricks that they are employing in order to get us there.

So here I am, wondering if Google+ has a role in my digital life. Should I dive in to it? Throw up my hands and say, “Fine! I’m in!” ?? Maybe I will. (sick taste in my mouth)

But it doesn’t matter either way, because the world has come to an end. My dishwasher is dead and Picnik is dying.

Is this a good reason to eat more cheese? Possibly.

10 People Are Talkin' To Me::

  1. That's a tough one.  I hate when things I depend on regularly are suddenly not there... I, too, would lose sleep over it.  :(

  2. i am so ashamed because i never used it and now that it's leaving i feel a sadness at never having used it.
and our dishwasher broke 2 days into living here and i had to wash and dry for a week while we waited for it to be fixed.  i feel your pain- and my hands were so dry!  invest in some awesome hand cream!

  3. Oh I so feel your pain although my dishwasher is working.  Last week the furnace stopped working on the coldest day here at one degree.  Thankfully it's working again.  I am not very happy with google right now, between GFC going away and now Picnik, I think I will not be joining Google+.  I read a blog the other day and they said that Google+ photo is not like picnik and they didn't like it.  Although maybe you will love it.  I feel like google is trying to shove us into using their products and that makes me dig my heels in and be stubborn.  It makes me even more happy to be switching over to WP soon.  Have a good day and sorry for the long comment.  Hopefully your dishwasher will work again soon!

Ange, I want to hear more about your move to word press! How are you planning to manage it? Yourself, hiring? Costs? I have been considering the same move since the day I started this blog. I would love to hear about your experience, k?

I am so sick of Google trying to force G+ down our throats. There used to be a sharing function in Google Reader that my husband, our friends, and I used every day. It feels like every choice Google makes is the wrong one. I totally feel your pain!!

REM is dead too, ya know. A bunch of quitters everywhere you look.

(although I never have used picnik because I am uncool)

Too bad an awesome handmade headboard doesn't clean dishes - you've totally got one of those.... :)

I know! They have this new DIY thing called "DIY Dishwasher". You don't even have to use a real, electronic dishwasher. You wash the dishes with your hands. Personally, I think it's totally lame and I refuse to conform to fads. If i build a dish-washing headboard will you pin the fizzzz out of it?!

  8. I was ticked as well about Picnik! Grrr. I don't have a Google+ account and hadn't planned on getting one. I'm also trying to figure out what I'm going to use. When you decide, let me know will ya? (confession: Every time I think about it, I call them a bad name in my head that starts with eff and ends with ers.)

When I am producing a post, I have Windows live writer open and 3 websites: my blog, pinterest, and picnik. Okay, and almost always Google and then I go to Facebook to announce the new post. But, my point is- picnik is an ESSENTIAL part of each and every post. I am seriously worried about how to replace it.

I'm having anxiety attacks because Picnik is closing down!!!  I have tried several other photo editing tools since the announcement and they are all terrible...not as easy to use as Picnik and the results aren't as good either.    My husband gave me Paint Shop Pro for Christmas...even though I wanted PhotoShop he said this was cheaper...so I have it, might as well try it.  I used Picnik everyday also and am still in panic mode.!!!  I am frantically trying to find something else before Picnik closes!!!  :(
I enjoyed your post!   And good luck with your dishwasher!
